“That was regrettable. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the billionaire owner.
