Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
