Per figures provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinian individuals have lost their lives while in custody beginning in October 2023. An advocacy organization operating from Israel has reported that the actual toll is likely substantially greater, as a result of many of missing people in Gaza.

Study Results

“While we are offering documentation for a higher number of deaths than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he said. “We are confident that there are still individuals who lost their lives in custody that we are unaware of.”

Civilian Casualties

Restricted Israeli data suggests that the majority of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who perished in jail were non-combatants, based on a simultaneous examination.

During May of the current year, a military intelligence database tracking all militants in Gaza, a roster of over 47,000 identified persons, listed only 21 casualties in detention. By that point, 65 Gazans from Gaza had perished in prison.

Prison Situation

Assault, torture, and other abuse of detainees from Palestine has become routine across Israel’s detention facilities over two years of hostilities. Senior officials have openly admitted starvation rations and an below-ground detention center detaining Palestinian individuals who are denied sunlight.

An effort to charge additional individuals over a severe beating involving sexual violence led to public rallies and the arrest of Israel’s chief legal officer, with the suspects now demanding that indictments against them are dropped.

“Despite this significant total of deaths, throughout the conflict no one has been arrested,” the representative stated. “There are no indictments over any death.

“As long as these policies remain in effect, every Palestinian in confinement is at peril, even the those in good health, even the youth who have no medical issues.”

High-Profile Cases

Certain fatalities in custody have been publicly known, for instance a middle-aged medical chief who died in prison after 120 days in confinement.

A detainee incarcerated with the deceased reported that he was brought to the yard by prison staff immediately preceding his death, visibly injured and unclothed from the hips downward. His body remains unreleased to Gaza.

Further inmates who perished in detention in Israel remain anonymous. Detention administrators and armed services supplied analysts with the total of fatalities in custody, and minimal additional information including the location where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges

In 21 cases, mainly individuals from Gaza, researchers were not able to connect the limited information supplied by government bodies to a death documented by advocacy bodies, either through accounts from released detainees or reporting in the media.

The detainees’ families may not know about their relatives’ casualties also, as Israel has made it difficult to track Palestinian individuals it is confining.
